There used to be redwoods-
As big around as the house you live in
And twice as tall as the ones we know.
Forests among forests
Generations of birds and squirrels never touching the ground
Among the canopy of endless green and brown
They stretched from the mountains to the sea
Like gods,
Like giants.
There used to be redwoods here.
Now they’re gone.
